Why Michigan Chimneys Fail at the Top

The Great Lakes region averages about 42 freeze-thaw cycles a year. Water absorbed into brick and mortar expands roughly 9% when it freezes. Repeated cycles fracture the masonry — spalling — and the crown and top courses take it worst.

That's why Michigan has its own chimney cap rule: a minimum 10-degree slope, 2-inch overhang, and 4-inch metal lap. We build to it. Most contractors don't know it exists.
